Athletic Club Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera is on the verge of signing for Manchester United according to reports in Spain and England.
The 24-year-old who has spent three seasons with the Basque club, playing a key role in helping them qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League as Athletic finished fourth behind Atletico Madrid, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid last season.
He almost joined Manchester United on the last day of August 2013, but the move ended in farce as United failed to pay his 36 million euros (49 million US dollars) buyout clause.
Now with that clause due to rise to 40 million euros at the end of June the English side, who have announced Holland national team coach Louis Van Gaal as the replacement for David Moyes and embarked on a massive rebuilding program after last season's failure to qualify for Europe have moved to take Herrera to the Premier League.
The news comes just four days after Herrera's agent Arturo Canales commented in the Spanish press that "there has been nothing new during the year. There have been rumors that United would try to sign him and even that Jose Mourinho wanted him for Chelsea, but we have not heard anything. Athletic is focused on Athletic and nothing else."
