Manchester City have signed defender Eliaquim Mangala from Porto for a fee understood to be about £32m. |
France defender Eliaquim Mangala became Manchester City's most expensive signing of the off-season when he joined the English champion from FC Porto yesterday for a reported fee of 32 million pounds (US$54 million).
The 23-year-old Paris-born Mangala becomes the sixth signing of the summer, and will quickly re-join his old Porto teammate Fernando at the Etihad Stadium.
Strengthening City's defense is a priority for manager Manuel Pellegrini, who has already signed right back Bacary Sagna and goalkeeper Willy Caballero. The 23-year-old Mangala will compete with Martin Demichelis to partner Vincent Kompany at center back.
