China's Peng Shuai powered into the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of her career on Sunday night, outslugging Lucie Safarova in a tight two-setter.
The 39th-ranked Peng beat a seeded player for the third straight match at the U.S. Open, defeating No. 14 Safarova 6-3, 6-4.
Peng had been 0-5 in fourth-round matches at major tournaments. She becomes the third Chinese player ever to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal, after Li Na (who has done it a total of 10 times in her illustrious career) and Zheng Jie (who has done it twice).
Peng Shuai, who paired with Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei and currently ranked third in women's doubles, are also in pursuit of their first US Open doubles title after the pair had already in the last 16 race.
The doubles pair, known as "the Cross-Strait Combination", had won two Slam doubles titles at the Wimbledon last year and French Open this year.
