Fabio Fognini showed his middle finger to the Shanghai crowd after a two-set loss Tuesday. He earlier slammed his racket to the court.

Fabio Fognini of Italy has been fined US$2,000 for flashing an obscene gesture at the crowd after crashing out to a 553rd-ranked Chinese wildcard at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

The No. 17-ranked Fognini showed his middle finger to fans at the Qizhong Tennis Stadium in suburban Minhang District as he left the court following his 6-7 (5), 4-6 loss to Wang Chuhan in the first round on Tuesday. He also gave Wang a shove with his elbow after the two shook hands at the net.

The Italian is routinely fined for his bad behavior on the court. He received fines totaling US$27,500 at Wimbledon this year for unsportsmanlike conduct and showing a visible obscenity during his first-round match.

Wang, who became the first Chinese player ever to reach the second round at an ATP 1000 tournament, however, lost in the second round in Shanghai to Tunisian qualifier Malek Jaziri 0-6, 4-6 yesterday.
