Former France defender William Gallas announced Thursday night through L'Equipe 21 TV channel to hang up his boots.
"It's something not easy to tell," he said about his decision during a full interview to Sport Confidential. "One thinks he can keep going, but today I cannot."
The 37-year-old kicked off his long career of 19 years in 1995 with local club Caen before joining Marseille (1997-2001).
He was brought to the English Premier League by then-Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri in 2001, winning twice Premiership titles (2005, 2006) at Stamfort Bridge before going to Arsenal as part of the Ashley Cole transfer the other way.
Moving to Tottenham in 2010, Gallas stayed with the London club for three years, and signed a one-year deal with Perth Glory in 2013 to become the first French engaging in Australia's A-League.
He made his international debut in 2002 and was a member of the French side that lost the 2006 World Cup final to Italy. With 84 selections to the national squad, Gallas have five scores as a defender.
