Pole dancing is all the rage in Argentina as it hosts the South American championship once again, drawing more than 150 athletes competing in 11 categories.

On Friday, dozens of competitors from the South American championship gave the public a taste of their skills in the center of Buenos Aires.

"The aim was to spread the word about the tournament that will take place from Saturday to Monday," the organizers said.

The dancers went from the door of the cultural and commercial complex Paseo La Plaza to the traditional Obelisk, along the Corrientes Avenue, where the dancers surprised citizens and tourists. The passers-by took advantage of the opportunity to get to know the sport and take photos.

"It is an activity that I have done for many years and I love it. We were champions last year," dancer Daniela Schmoll told Xinhua.

"Everything began eight years ago in Argentina. Then it expanded to South America, to countries such as Peru, Brazil and Chile," explained Schmoll.

The television program "Dancing for a Dream" by popular entertainer Marcelo Tinelli also helped by including the discipline as one of the tests, remembered the dancer.

"It is a pleasure to be in a competition, travelling to an event like this for the first time. We are trying to raise the level," said Mexican dancer Angel Fregosa.

"I would like to leave a good impression here so that people can see the level we have in Mexico," added Fregosa.

The current tournament will be the eighth edition and it is the only one to be endorsed by the International Pole Dance Fitness Association and by the Argentinian Pole Sport Association.

In the South American edition, competitors from Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela, El Salvador and Mexico will participate.

The winners of the elite categories will win the opportunity to represent their countries in the upcoming world championships in the United States and China in 2016.

The championship will be judged by prominent international figures in Pole Sport.

"More than 150 athletes will compete in 11 categories. In the Argentinian championship there will be categories for amateurs, professionals and the elite," according to the organizers.
