China's equestrian Olympian: Interview with Alex Hua Tian

The idea of a lack of talent in China is being dispelled before the question has even been asked. "I don't think it is anything to do with lack of talent," he tells us.

"There are some super talented riders in China. I think it's more about the development of the sport and also the culture of the sport."

There are more and more stables opening up, and more and more sport horses are being imported. It's just a case of waiting for it to catch on, and for the teams of riders to actually want to compete at the Olympic level.

Between training and competing, Alex has found time to take on students. Alexia Schwartz is training at Alex and his girlfriend's stables in preparation for the next Asian Games. Alongside her is Sarah Rao, an 18-year-old student studying equine business and, under Alex's tutelage, aiming to one day compete for China in the Olympics and Asian Games.
