Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova who is a Wimbledon champion and FedCup winner was attacked in her flat on Tuesday morning in Prostejov, said Karel Tejkal, spokesman for the Czech FedCup team.
He said Kvitova was treated by doctors in Brno.
Kvitova suffered cuts on her left hand with which she holds the racket because she was defending herself in the attack, local media reported.
The injury is reportedly not life-threatening.
Her tendons have allegedly been affected by the cuts, and she is likely to undergo an operation, according to reports.
Tejkal called it a chance crime.
Kvitova said on the social network that a man attacked her with a knife, and she was hurt in the left hand when she tried to defend herself.
Prostejov police spokesman Frantisek Korinek said the perpetrator, about 35 years old, entered the flat by a trick and then fled from the scene of the crime.
The police have launched an intensive search for him.
Shortly before the attack, Kvitova announced on Tuesday that she will not take part in Hopman Cup because of a slower recovery of a fatigue fracture of tarsal bones in her right foot. She planned to start gradually burdening the leg and to play tournaments in Australia.
Kvitova won Wimbledon Champion in 2011 and 2014 and five times the FedCup tournament.
