In China, a great practitioner of the martial arts is often described as the "master of 18 weapons".

The bow and arrow, dagger, sword and spear are among these 18 weapons, all of which have at one time or another in Chinese history featured in battle. Some of these weapons have, over the centuries, become something akin to cultural icons - swords in particular.
