Introduction:
As golf grows in popularity the number of courses in Beijing expands, but there will be continued pressure on facilities as two factors come into play.
One is the number of would-be players, and the other is the fact that golf continues to be a game for the wealthy. In time this will change, as it has in other Asian and Western countries where golf has become a major participant sport, but for the time being membership of a golf club and playing fees continue to represent a significant cost.
One consequence of this is the rapid growth of specialist Driving Ranges. These present a number of advantages: 1. A lower cost for players who are new to the game 2. It's never an easy step for the new golfer – particularly someone who has taken up the game as an adult – to do their learning on the course. Driving ranges provide the opportunity to learn the game off the course, where a single shot can be repeated and practiced, and where the fear of embarrassment is reduced. 3. A Driving Range offers a year-round opportunity to play for an hour or two when time is convenient, particularly during the week and even in the evenings, whereas a round of golf will often require four or five hours which are often only available at the weekend when golf courses are likely to be busy.
Background:
The Royal Link Driving Range targets the top end of the golf market, for both experienced players and those new to the game, and has invested heavily in the appropriate golfing facilities and equipment, which are top-rated. The Club is situated to the north-west of the city on the north side of the Zizhuyuan Road between the 3rd and 4th Rings, just inside the 4th Ring.
It was established in 2007 by Lee Tae-Seok, a Korean businessman with a background in IT whose involvement demonstrates that the growth of golf in China is creating business opportunities even for those new to the sport. The club has been in operation for just over a year and has a strong and growing membership of professionals and white-collar workers, drawn largely from the Banking and IT industries based at nearby Zhongguancun and from senior governmental staff.
Location:
Royal Link is situated to the north-west of the city on the north side of the Zizhuyuan Road between the 3rd and 4th Rings, just inside the 4th Ring. It lies about 8 km from the City Centre – 30 mins/1 hour (40-100 RMB) by taxi depending on traffic. The nearest Metro Station is currently Wukesong on Line 1, about 4 km directly south from Royal Link on the 4th Ring, but Line 10, currently under construction, will terminate about 2 km to the north of the Range at Sihai Bridge.
The closest quality hotel is the Shangri-La Hotel Beijing, also on the Zizhuyuan Road just outside the 3rd Ring and about 5 minutes from Royal Link by taxi. The Shangri-La Hotel is equipped with a Golf Simulator.
