One person died and several more were injured on Wednesday when
soccer fans clashed in Chimbote, a city in the Peru department of
Ancash, police told media.
An Allianza Lima fan died after being hit by a car as he fled a
hail of stones thrown by fans of Unversitario de Deportes, hours
before a derby match between the two.
The fight broke out on the Pan-American Highway, some 414 km
northeast of Peru's capital Lima, beginning when 200 UdD fans
blocked the highway with large stones in a bid to halt Allianza
fans who were on an inter-city bus.
Witnesses told domestic radio that there were around one
thousand UdD fans and 200 Allianza fans in the clash.
The two teams are set to play on Wednesday after noon at
Chimbote's 25,000-seater Segundo Arellano Stadium.
The National Police and the nation's Civil Defense Agency had
previously barred the game from Lima's Monumental Stadium.
