Sun Xiang became the first Chinese player to have played in both the Champions league and UEFA Cup, when he came on as a substitute for Austria Vienna in its 0-1 away loss to Kazakh side Tobol Kostanay in Europe's second tier tournament on Thursday.
Sun previously competed in the prestigious Champions League while at PSV Eindhoven in 2007.
Sun, who came in late in the second half, saw his 30-meter freekick hit the wall. The left-sided midfielder lost his starting place after scoring an own goal during his second appearance for Vienna in an Austrian league.
The Shanghai Shenhua player went on loan to Austria earlier this month.
Vienna, which failed to break down a stubborn Kazakh defense, will host the return leg back home on July 31.
Elsewhere, Manchester City beat EB/Streymur 2-0, while Berlin Hertha ran up the biggest score of the night by defeating Moldova's FC Nistru Otaci 8-1 at home.
