The sixth-ranked Russian, who advanced to the second round with a straight-sets victory over Chris Guccione of Australia on Tuesday, pulled out yesterday because of a wrist injury he suffered during late practice session on Tuesday.
The third-seeded Verdasco had little trouble against Lejnieks, the lowest-ranked player in the field at No. 664 and playing in his first ATP event. The 15th-ranked Spaniard, a runner-up to Andy Murray here last year, had two breaks in each set to close the match in 65 minutes.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals was German Rainer Schuettler, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia.
In first-round action, Kazakhstan qualifier Andrey Golubev served 19 aces to beat Olivier Rochus of Belgium, 6-1, 6-4 while Murray, the top seed, eased past Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-3, 6-3.
In Basel, Switzerland, Roger Federer was stretched to three sets before beating 86th-ranked Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 on Tuesday in the first round of the Swiss Indoors.
The top-seeded Swiss had a match point in the second set tiebreaker despite trailing 1-5 early, but he needed three more in the deciding set before advancing to the second round.
"It was more like a serving contest," said Federer, who did not face a break point. "He served in all corners pretty well."
In yesterday's second round action, Benjamin Becker outlasted Andreas Beck 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an all-German clash and sixth-seeded Russian Igor Andreev struggled past another German Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (6), 6-7 (0), 7-5.
