"Yevgeny Plushenko is not taking part in the competition due to injury," the Iceberg stadium arena announced.

The 31-year-old warmed up before the men's competition and then skated to the judges holding his back, and announced he was out.

Plushenko, the men's champion in the 2006 Olympics, just led Russia to the team title in Sochi. He was runner-up in both the 2002 and 2010 Olympics.
