Established in 1819, the University of Virginia is a public research university founded by Thomas Jefferson and is the only university in the United States to be designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The most famous and unique architecture of the university is found in the "Academic Village". It features the grand Lawn, terraced green space surrounded by residential and academic buildings. The Lawn is one of the landmarks in the university. Another highlight on the campus is the Rotunda, found in the center building of the university.
