Germany was the fourth largest consumer of gold in the world in 2011, with its total demand jumping from 126.9 tonnes in 2010 to 159.3 tonnes in 2011, a 26 percent increase. In the fourth quarter of 2011, the country's demand reached 39.7 tonnes, up by 15 percent from 34.6 tonnes a year earlier. The surge in demand in Europe was driven mainly by Germany and Switzerland, according to the WGC.
