Todai (short for " Tokyo daigaku" ) has produced 15 Japanese prime ministers. Founded in 1877 under the Meiji Emperor's " open door" policy, it was soon renamed Imperial University, but reverted to the original post-1945. Today, around 29,000 students attend its 12 faculties and 12 graduate schools. Eleven institutes research phenomena such as cosmic rays and earthquakes.
