As one of China's most developed local economies, Shanghai has produced a host of super-rich. Hurun's latest Shanghai Wealth Report proves this statement to still be accurate.
According to this year's report, there are 370,000 individuals who are worth 6 million yuan (US$950,000) in Shanghai today. Among them 140,000 possess personal assets worth over 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million), representing a year-on-year increase of 6.1 percent and accounting for 13.7 percent of China's individuals worth over 10 million yuan.
Furthermore, there are 8,200 super-rich individuals with personal assets worth 100 million yuan (US$16 million), up 5.1 percent from last year, a growth slightly lower than Shanghai's 8.2 percent GDP growth in 2011.
This year, East Hope Group's Liu Yongxing and his family remain the wealthiest in Shanghai, boasting a personal fortune of 41 billion yuan. The 10 richest billionaires this year had a total assets of 253 billion yuan.
Property, manufacturing as well as finance and investment form the major sources of wealth for the Shanghai billionaires.
