China's telecom giant, China Mobile Ltd, with a brand value of 276 billion yuan (US$43.8 billion), beat last year's defending champion Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) at 253 billion yuan (US$40.2 billion) to top the list of the 100 most valuable Chinese brands in 2012, according to the 2012 Hurun Brand List recently released by Hurun Research Institute.
Published annually since 2006, the comprehensively assesses the value of China's home-grown brands based on relevant economic statistics and consumer survey results.
The combined brand value of the top 100 hit 2.5 trillion yuan (US$396.8 billion), slipping 3 percent in value from 2011, marking its first decline in three years despite 108 percent growth since 2009.
The top five brands on the list all exceed 100 billion yuan (US$15.9 billion) in value. The threshold for being included on the list this year was 3.5 billion yuan (US$556 million), a 100-million-yuan (US$15.9 million) increase over last year.
39 private brands made it into the list, three less than last year. China's search engine giant Baidu, fourth in the overall rankings, stood out as the most valuable among all private brands at 147 billion yuan (US$23.3 billion). Remarkably, Jack Ma, legendary Chinese entrepreneur and CEO of Alibaba Group, created four of the private brands which appeared on the list: Taobao (20th), Alibaba (48th), Alipay (42nd) and Tmall (99th).
50 percent of the top 100 brands came from fields such as finance and banking, real estate, information service and garments. More finance and banking brands made it onto the list compared to real estate, while listed brands from the garment sector reduced sharply.
In terms of headquarter locations, 32 brands are from Beijing, followed by Guangdong with 22, Shanghai with 11, and Zhejiang with seven.
