Top 20 companies to work for in China 2012

China Mobile, the world's largest mobile carrier by subscriber, retained its title as the best company to work for in China this year to become a four-time champion, according to a list of top 50 employers published by Chinahr.com, one of China's leading recruitment websites.

The list, which was released on August 21 and ranked 50 employers on four dimensions: compensation, brand, corporate culture and career development, saw a big change in the top-10 lineup from last year's rankings.

E-commerce giant Alibaba and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China's largest bank by market value, were edged out of the top 10 from the No.3 and 5 spots last year respectively.

Top-tier cities reclaimed their popularity with job hunters this year, with 63 percent of those surveyed preferring megacities like Beijing and Guangzhou, a sharp rise from last year's 38 percent. Twenty percent of the respondents favored rapidly developing cities in South and East China.

The survey also noted that Shanghai lost luster as an ideal place to start a career for local graduates, as only 61.8 percent of them, compared with 27.8 percent last year, planned an exodus from the city after graduation. Analysts attributed the phenomenon to increasing competition from Shanghai's neighbors like Hangzhou, Suzhou and Nanjing, which all have robust economies.

Public services overtook finance as the most preferred sector this year, after the latter had clinched the top sector position for the past four years in a row.

This year, state-owned enterprises still dominated the list, but foreign companies continued a three-year streak in their growing popularity with fresh graduates, with 18 foreign enterprises placing among the top 50, an increase of 8 spots since last year.
