Located on the Cuiwei Road in Wuhan, the Guiyuan Temple is one of the four biggest temples in the city; the other three are Baotong Temple, Gude Temple and Zhengjue Temple. It was built in 1658, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), by a monk named Bai Guang. Covering an area of 4.67 hectares, the temple is famous for its magnificent architecture, elegant sculptures and abundance of treasures, including Buddhist texts, statues, stone sculptures, calligraphy works and ancient codes and records in foreign languages.

A great number of foreign politicians, including Sihanouk, the former King of Cambodia, Kissinger, the former United States Secretary of State, Li Guangyao, the former prime minister of Singapore, Yasuhiro Nakasone, the former Prime Minister of Japan, have visited the temple.
