The latest Hurun rich list shows that the number of billionaires in the world has expanded by 414 to a record-breaking 1,867.
The number of rich people of Chinese origin has reached 457, accounting for 24 percent of all the people on the list, including 291 living in the Chinese mainland, 64 in Hong Kong, 37 in Taiwan, 2 in Macao and 63 in other countries. Their average wealth is US$2.69 billion and their average age is 59.
The real estate tycoon Li Ka-shing, chairman of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. and Cheung Kong Holdings Ltd., claimed the top spot, with a total personal wealth rising 3 percent to US$33 billion. He ranks 12th in the global list and remains the richest person in Asia.
Real estate and manufacturing are still the top 2 industries that the billionaires of Chinese origin are engaged in, accounting for 26.7 percent and 21.4 percent respectively on the list, followed by finance and investment.
The people on this list are resident in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao and other overseas areas.
