Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870 crashed in the Tyrrhenian Sea on June 27, 1980, killing all 81 people on board while flying from Bologna, Italy to Palermo, Italy. Francesco Cossiga, former Italian president attributed the cause of the crash to a missile fired from a French Navy aircraft, however, Frank Taylor, a British investigator, said that it was due to the bomb installed in the washing room in his report. Finally, on January 23, 2013, Italy's top criminal court ruled that the flight was brought down by a stray missile with "abundantly" clear evidence and confirming the lower court's order that the Italian government must pay compensation.
