The latest rankings of the world's top universities by subject have been released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a leading global career and education network.
In this sixth edition, the list covers a record-breaking 42 subjects, making it the largest of its kind. The result is based on the expert opinion of 76,798 leading academics and 44,426 employers around the world, as well as analysis of 28.5 million research papers and over 113 million citations sourced from the Scopus/Elsevier bibliometric database.
The top spots in 24 subjects are equally split between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. Chinese universities make the top 10 in five subjects.
In terms of architecture and built environment, MIT ranks first this year, followed by University College London (UCL) and University of California, Berkeley (UCB).
China's Tsinghua University also squeezed into the top 10 in architecture. As the country's best-performing university, it claims three top 10 places, with the other two being in Engineering (Civil and Structural) and Materials Science. Peking University makes the grade in Modern Languages and Linguistics.
