Cultural sites in Beijing

After restoration, the Northwestern watchtower of the Beijing Forbidden City now looks even better. The yellow glazed tile roof and the gilded ball on the top glittering in the sunlight altogether make it more grave and imposing. A watchtower in the traditional Chinese architecture is very peculiar in shape; it usually has cross ridges with three layers of eaves, and a complicated multi-angle wooden frame. The structure and scene reflect the superb skill and richness of traditional Chinese architecture.[Photo by Yang Dong/China.org.cn]
