Baosheng Temple was built in the second year (503) of the Tianjian reign in the Liang Dynasty. However, it was destroyed in 845 during Tang Dynasty and then rebuilt in 1073 during the Song Dynasty.
It houses the 18 classic arhat statues (保圣寺罗汉塑像) from Yang Huizhi, a Tang Dynasty master of Sculpture. However, due to the weather and chaos caused by war, half of them have been destroyed. Now, the existing 9 statues represent various famous arhats, including the Dharma (the founder of the religion), the Tanfu Arhat (bare-bellied arhat) and the Xianglong (dragon-defeating) Arhat. All statues are vivid in expression and properly proportioned, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship during the Tang Dynasty.
