Located 17 km to the northeast of Hongdong County, Shanxi Province, Guangsheng Temple (广胜寺) was originally constructed in 147 AD of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The temple was then damaged in an earthquake in 1303 Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and was rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The temple consists of three main parts: the upper temple, the lower temple and the Water God Temple. The upper temple is on the top of Huoshan Mountain, featuring its magnificent and splendid hall. It also has many famous pagodas, such as the Feihong Pagoda, also known as Flying Rainbow Tower. The lower temple lies at the foot of Huoshan Mountain. The Water God Temple is next to the lower temple. Guangsheng Temple is well known for its frescoes and statues, including the fresco of Yuan Drama, a rare resource for those studying Chinese dramas.
