- Location: Ruicheng County, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province
Located in Ruicheng County, Shanxi Province, the construction of the temple (永乐宫) began in 1247 and was completed in 1358 during the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), while the famous Yongle Palace murals were painted during the ensuing Ming and Qing dynasties.
Covering an area of 86,000 square meters, its main buildings are arranged along a north-south central axis and the whole construction features the unique architecture style of the Yuan Dynasty. The complex features the most intact compound of buildings left over from the Yuan Dynasty. Murals found in the various halls total 960 square meters. They feature rich themes and showcase superb painting techniques. They are rightly considered masterpieces of Chinese art.
