The tourist hub around Xinjiang Road and Mingshan Road has a cluster of convenience stores and supermarkets. You will find banks with ATMs, including a branch of the China Construction Bank at 551 Mingshan Road. The adjacent travel agencies cater for local tour groups. Next door to the Guangyuan Hotel, at 619 Mingshan Road, there is a pharmacy.

The Runwan Jia Shenghuo Supermarket on Western Road is a good place to stock up on snacks and drinks for desert journeys. It is open from 830am to 11pm (10pm in winter.) The Dunhuang Bookstore on Western Road stocks a few English books about Mogao. TT Go sportswear shop is a good option for bike hire and you can also buy a camping stove and outdoors clothes. In general clothes are expensive in Dunhuang, which is hardly surprising given the long distances they must be transported.

This is a good shop to explore a diverse range of Dunhuang craft products, from agricultural products like dried grapes and dates to wood sculptures, stone paintings and glowing cups.

Shop here for sleeping bags, water proof mattress, cooking stuff and telescopes – everything you might need for that night in the desert.

TTGO Bike (自行车专卖店)

First Floor Rea-Estate Company Building, Xinjian Road (opposite the south end of the Commercial Street).

This is a convenient place to hire a bike; RMB5/hr or RMB50/day. The shop also sells bike accessories and maintenance equipment.
