There are no direct international routes to Dunhuang and so visitors will likely change plane at either Beijing, Shanghai or Xian. A direct flight from Dunhuang to Beijing takes about three hours, and two hours from Dunhuang to Xian. There are also services from Dunhuang to Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu, Dalian and the northwest cities of Lanzhou and Urumqi.

Dunhuang airport (IATA: DNH) is located 13km east of downtown. The taxi fare to downtown from the stand outside the airport, is RMB50 These taxis do not usually run on the clock. Hourly shuttle buses also depart and some of the better hotels will pickup. Alternatively, stroll ten minutes to the new train station and catch a bus into the city.
