Qingdao, a coastal city of Shandong province, has invested 3.7 billion yuan (US$ 580.9 million) in 250 projects aimed at reducing the amount of pollutants released into the environment from 2006 to 2010. Over the course of these five years, the released amount of two major pollutants, chemical oxygen demand and sulfur dioxide, dropped by 19.5 and 27.4 percent, respectively. The city aims to re-invent itself as a more livable place. |
