Qingdao to build second undersea tunnel across Jiaozhou Bay
China.org.cn, October 27, 2017 Print E-mail

The much anticipated second undersea tunnel project of Qingdao has completed feasibility study.

According to the preliminary plan, the two-way, six-lane tunnel will open to traffic all-weather, linking Shibei and Huangdao districts across the Jiaozhou Bay. It will mainly serve passenger vehicles, with a designed speed of 80 kilometers per hour.

With a 15.8-kilometer full expanse, including 11.1 kilometers crossing sea, the new tunnel doubles the length of the 7.8 kilometer Jiaozhou Bay Subsea Tunnel, Qingdao’s first undersea tunnel project.

Qingdao has invested heavily in improving cross-Jiaozhou Bay transportation, in a bid to integrate and coordinate urban development in the city. Besides the undersea tunnel in the planning, Metro Line 1 and 8, scheduled to be completed by 2020 and 2021, will offer diversified transportation options to cross the bay.
