Sixteen policemen have been killed and 16 others injured during a raid on a border patrol armed police division in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Police say the attackers fled their vehicle after smashing into a team of more than 70 policemen who were doing regular morning exercises. The attackers then tossed hand grenades into a police barracks and attacked officers with knives.
Police later found 10 home-made explosives, a home-made hand gun and four knives in the vehicle. No civilians were hurt in the incident, and officials say the crime resembles attacks carried out by Eastern Turkistan separatists.
