The Beijing Paralympic Games torch relay is underway in Shenzhen, a coastal city in Guangdong Province. It's the first leg of the "Modern China" route, showcasing China's achievements in its modernization drive.

It started in Lotus Hill Park and will end at Baiyi Square. Friday's first torch bearer was Liu Hong, a noted race walk athlete. She placed fourth in the 20-kilometer race walk in the Beijing Summer Olympics.

About 70 torchbearers are participating in the 3.5-kilometer relay. Some are disabled athletes who've participated in national or Paralympic Games.
