At least 40 people were injured. Officials say the riot started late Sunday as guards searched cells for drugs and arms. Inmates hung several messages from windows during the riot claiming guards had killed at least two prisoners, beating one man to death on Saturday and killing the other last week. The prisoners also want longer visiting hours and to be able to see people who aren't direct family members.
Early on Monday, state and federal police aided by soldiers retook control of the penitentiary.
