All of the acts in the competition were choreographed by the students themselves. Some followed narratives about contemporary campus life. Many focused on the ethnic culture of China. Dancing has flourished in recent years among the Han,Tibetan,Mongolian, Uygur and Korean ethnic groups. It's a golden era that's given rise to internationally acclaimed dances such as the Dynamic Yunnan, Legend of Kungfu and Lishui Jinsha.
The Lotus Awards were established in 1998. They are jointly organized by the Chinese Association of Dancers and the League of Chinese Literature and Arts. The varsity section was added to the main competition six years ago. It is scheduled to be hosted in Shanxi province over the next decade.
