The fifth International Fiber Art Biennale Exhibition opened at Tsinghua University's Art and Design College on Tuesday. It is the most important event on the globe, dedicated to this artistic genre. Three hundred fiber artists from twenty six countries brought their works, numbering more than 300, to the gathering.
The Exhibition called "From Lausanne to Beijing", acknowledges its debt to its precursor, "The International Tapestry Art Biennale Exhibition." That event, first held in Lausanne in 1962, was inaugurated by French artist Jean Lurcat. After fifteen biennual editions, the Tapestry Biennale faded away after 1996, for lack of financial support. Tsinghua University professor Lin Lecheng inaugurated the latest tribute to the form in China. The first International Fiber Art Biennale Exhibition was held in 2000.
After successfully holding four sessions, the Fiber Art gathering reached an apex this year, with the greatest number of works participating, the widest diversity of subjects and the broadest scope or artistic technique.
