In 1976, Lin joined Qiong Yao's company. She always played the female protagonist in Qiong Yao based movies. Her films included "Cloud of Romance" and "Moon Fascinating, Bird Sweet". Chinese film lovers considered Lin as something of a goddess.
Lin changed direction in 1977. Hong Kong director Li Han-Chiang asked her to play Jia Baoyu, the male role in the "Dream of the Red Chamber". Lin accepted and made her decision to cease to be a screen idol.
In 1983, Lin worked with Hong Kong director Tsui Hark in "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain". Then she moved her career to Hong Kong. A new phase of her career began when she starred in "Police Story."
