Canadians hold first Chinese language contest
Adjust font size:

Canada's first Chinese language contest was held over the weekend in Toronto. Fifty students, ages 13 to 18, participated in the competition.

The contestants demonstrated their Chinese verbal skills through presentations and knowledge contests. Chinese is one of the most popular foreign languages offered in high schools across the Canada. And has also made it into the curriculum of kindergartens and primary schools in many of the country's provinces.

Contestant Tenth Grade said, “People call Asians growing up in north America "Bananas", for they are no different from an American except for their complexion. I am known in my school as an egg, because I know everything about China despite my white skin color."
