The construction of the Three Gorges Dam changed the conditions in the river, reducing the number of some rare species and commercial fish.

The release, launched by both the central and local governments, aimed at restoring and improving the river's ecological environment.

In order to help species in the river increase effectively, all the fish released were native breeds.
