With memories of the 2003 SARS epidemic still fresh, Shanghai is now on high alert over the H1N1 flu. The city has held a drill to prepare for a possible outbreak.
The drill started at around 2pm, as a hospital in western Shanghai's Changning district received a male patient with a fever of 38.2 degrees. The patient told authorities he has just returned from Mexico via the United States.
As part of the drill, nurses immediately sanitized his hands and asked the patient to wear a mask. He was then transferred to a designated fever clinic where more doctors were on hand to diagnose his ailment.
At the same time, the suspected case was reported to the shift chief, and experts in the hospital. A group quickly gathered to conduct further consultations and tests. And it was determined the fake patient was infected with the H1N1 virus.
In response to the situation, an ambulance rushed the patient to the suburban Public Health Clinical Center for isolation at about 4 pm, and the flu case was successfully under control within three hours.
