China calls for stability in its Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This following Sunday's deadly riots in the capital, Urumqi. Meanwhile, President Hu Jintao has convened a meeting of the CPC Central Committee Politburo Standing Committee.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, Standing Committee members agree that stability in Xinjiang is the most important and pressing task.
They also promise "severe punishment" of the guilty in accordance with law.
The statement says the government will "firmly crack down on serious crimes, including assaults, vandalism, looting and arson," to maintain social stability and safeguard people's fundamental interests in Xinjiang.
