Typhoon Morakot has left hundreds of families in Taiwan homeless. However, with assistance from the Chinese mainland, prefabricated houses are now being built on the island.
After a brief ceremony, the assembly of 200 prefabricated houses in Kaohsiung County has gotten underway. Nearly 10 hectares of land have been set aside for their construction.
Approximately 600 families are slated to be relocated to the temporary homes. Local residents seem satisfied with their future shelters.
A local resident said, "This is very good. The traffic is convenient and the air is fresh. There is no pollution at all."
The prefabricated houses are expected to be completed within three weeks. Three mainland technicians arrived early Sunday morning to provide instructions. They hope their help can speed up the assembly process.
A mainland technician said, "I'm here to give some technical instruction and training to local workers."
The Chinese mainland has contributed nearly 800 million yuan RMB two weeks after the disater hit the island. The Taiwan authorities have worked out a three-year reconstruction plan with a budget of about 100-billion New Taiwan Dollars.
