Disaster response officials there say typhoon Morakot has claimed 461 lives on the island. 192 others are still missing.
Xiao-lin Village in Kaoh-siung County alone had reported 318 confirmed deaths on Tuesday. The village was wiped out by landslides. Residents have decided to stop digging the site for bodies. The decision was made after torrential rain made the ground unstable. Local villagers also hope by leaving the bodies buried they can rest in peace.
