In the past, it was common young ladies in China to get married in their early twenties. But nowadays, especially in China's big cities, lots of young women are delaying their marital vows indefinitely for a variety of reasons. And since 'art reflects life,' it's not surprising that a recently produced stage play has found a way to dramatize this trend.
"Leftover Bachelor Girl" is about a young urbanite in her early 30s. In her frantic hunt for an suitable husband, the protagonist uses familiar ploys to make herself more attractive and desirable, such as adopting a more youthful profile on her blog.
The creators of the show said that the title role is meant to represent a typical unmarried young woman in urban China. These women are mostly successful and career oriented. They have high education, high income, and even higher standards for a husband.
Although the comedy has its audience rolling in the aisles, it also gives them some food for thought.
An audience member said, "Unmarried young people are often under extraordinary pressure to earn money and sustain a demanding career. Actually, they might develop a fear or mistrust for marriage and love."
Director Li Bonan said, "Modern-day bachelor girls often have a very clear direction for their life. They expect very high standards for their life in general. Each of them might have a unique lifestyle. Actually, even their emotional and spiritual needs are kind of quantified. Their standards are hard and fast, even a bit rigid."
Of all the important decisions in life, marriage often poses the most formidable dilemma. The director hopes that people will realize that they should follow their hearts to find the love of their life.
