Germany's traditional carnival capital is filled with the music and merrymaking of the carnival season. The western city of Cologne kicked things off on Wednesday at 11:11am precisely.
To the traditional shouts of "alaaf," people dressed in costumes with their faces painted as clowns filled the marketplace. They sang traditional songs as sweets were thrown into the crowd. The fifth carnival season in Germany runs through the whole of winter until Ash Wednesday. During this time more than four hundred balls and other festivities take place.
