Last September, many children began suffering from kidney stones after drinking milk made from powder contaminated by melamine. More than a year has passed, some have recovered, but others are still in hospital.

Xitian is two and a half. With her mother, she travelled 200 kilometers to Lanzhou from Huining county for a medical exam. Over the past year, Xi has undergone many kinds of treatments to pulverize her kidney stones, but to no avail.

Xitian's mother said, "I couldn't fall asleep last night, but what can I do?"

In another ward, 4-year-old Wang Zhenyun is back in hospital. It's the second time. After 9 failed attempts at shock wave therapy to crush the stones, doctors resort to surgery.

Zhang Yongge, surgeon of PLA No. 1 Hospital, said, "We'll take out the stones with the help of an endoscope."

Wang Zhenyun's mother says the family spent their entire savings and borrowed money to pay the medical bills. The family received 2,000 yuan as compensation so far, but it is far from enough to pay off the debt.

The Gansu provincial Consumer Association is responsible for reporting new cases related to the scandal and distributing compensation to confirmed victims. But the head of the Association is refusing to reveal any details and progress of the work, saying it is inconvenient for them to disclose this information.
