During a rehearsal two weeks before the show at the National Stadium in Beijing, she leapt toward a moving stage that malfunctioned -- the resulting fall caused her to lose all feeling below the waist.

Though unable to perform at the opening ceremony her courage and strong will earned her a spot as the torch bearer of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Liu Yan, torch bearer of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, says, "I am very excited, it's the first meaningful thing after I was injured. The word 'Olympics Games' is very special for me. And my feelings are very complicated, but what is more is that I'm excited and happy."

Beijing Olympics opening ceremony director Zhang Yimou supported the special Vancouver Winter Olympics torch bearer.

Zhang Yimou, director of Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, says, "As we know, the torch bearer is a symbol and should be someone who can represent the Olympic spirit. I think Liu Yan is a true torch bearer of the 'Winter Olympics' because of her brave spirit and stalwart nature.

Liu Yan, the torch bearer of 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, says, "I couldn't stop my tears just now. I was very moved when I heard Zhang Yimou's words that from the bottom of his heart. All can recall my memories when I prepared for the opening ceremony."

At the peak of her golden career, Liu Yan lost the ability to perform her magical dances. But she is still dancing in her dreams.As the UN climate talks get underway, an alternative climate conference has opened in Copenhagen. Klimaforum-09 is organized by a broad coalition of Danish and international environmental movements as well as civil organizations.
