The opening day of the season's first Grand Slam has seen one of the biggest names on the women's side tumble out of contention as Maria Sharapova has been eliminated. Meanwhile, Zheng Jei, one of China's hopes is through to the second round after a tough battle against compatriot Peng Shuai.

Zheng Jie had a bad start to the match losing the first set to Peng Shuai 6- love in under half an hour. However,the 2007 Wimbledon semifinalist clawed herself back into the match by speeding up her attacking rhythm in the remainder of the match. She finally claimed the next two sets 6-1, 6-2 and with them her opening victory in Australian Open.
