African heads of state are in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, for a three-day summit.
On the African Union agenda are information and communication technologies, regional conflicts, climate change and a common stance on UN reforms.
African Union Commission chief Jean Ping opened the session with the good news. He said there's national unity in Kenya and Zimbabwe. Progress has also been made in the process to seek peace in Sudan's Darfur region and Somalia.
But political disputes still exist in some countries such as Madagascar and Nigeria.
